African flower granny square!

This pattern is in US terminology:

SL - slip stitch

CH - chain

SC - single crochet = go through stitch, yarn over and bring through. Should have 2 loops on the hook, yarn over and go through both.

HDC - half double crochet = Yarn over and go through stitch, yarn over and bring all loops through (should be 3 on hook) yarn over and go through all loops.

DC - double crochet = Yarn over and go through stitch, yarn over and bring all loops through. Should be 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and go through 2. Should be 2 loops on the hook, yarn over and go through the last 2 loops.

TR - Treble crochet = Yarn over twice and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops (should be 4). Yarn over and go through 2 loops, yarn over and go through another 2 loops and yarn over and go through the 2 loops.

7 DC Scallop = 7 DC into one stitch.

Lets get started!

row 1:

Start with a slip knot and CH 3, insert hook into the 1st CH to create a loop. now SC 8 times into that loop centre. At end of the round SL ST into the 1st SC created.

row 2:

keep same colour

CH 3 (counts as 1st DC) and DC again into that same stitch. CH 1 and DC 2 times into the next stitch, CH 1 and DC 2 times into the next stitch. Continue with this pattern until the end of row. At end of row do your last CH 1 and SL ST into the top of the CH 3 created at the beginning. Pull up yarn and cut and tie, you should have 8 petals of 2 DC and 1 CH between each.

Row 3:

Change colour! this colour is for your flower

Insert your hook into any of the CH 1 spaces created in previous round and CH 3 (counts as 1st DC). DC once more into the same CH 1 space and CH 2. Dc a further 2 times into that same CH 1 space.

Now CH 1 and move over to the next CH 1 space from previous round and DC 2 times into that same stitch, CH 2 and DC a further 2 times in same stitch. CH 1 and continue this pattern until the end of the row. At the end of the row, CH 1 and SL ST into the top of the CH 3 created at beginning.

Row 4:

Keep same colour

SL ST into the next 2 stitches until you are in the CH 2 space from previous row (between the 2 lots of 2 DC). CH 3 (counts as 1st DC) and DC a further 6 times (Total of 7) all in that same stitch. This is your 1st 7 DC scallop.

Go straight into the next CH 2 space from previous round and create another 7 DC scallop and continue this pattern until the end. At end SL ST into the top of the CH 3 created at beginning. You should have 8 lots of 7 DC scallops and these are your petals. Cut and tie off yarn.

Row 5: Change colour, this row is defining the flower shape.

Insert hook into the 1st stitch of one of the 7 DC scallops and CH 1 to secure. Go into the same stitch and SC. SC into the next 6 stitches and once you reach the area between the 2 scallops, you need to create a loose SC in the CH 1 space from row 3.This means SC but bring up enough yarn so it doesn't fold your flower.

This is hard to explain so see picture below of how it should look :)

After that SC into the next 7 stitches around the scallop and once you reach the area in between the next 2 scallops, do the exact same as before and loose SC in that CH 1 space from row 3.

At end SL ST into the 1st SC created and cut and tie off yarn.

Row 6: Change colour (boarder colour)

Insert hook into any of the loose SC from previous round and tie new colour on. CH 2 (counts as 1st HDC). Skip one stitch and HDC into the next. SC into the next 3 stitches and HDC into the next. Skip one stitch and you should now be at your first corner (above a loose SC from previous round). TR 2 times into that same stitch and CH 1, TR another 2 times int that same stitch (this has created your 1st corner to the square). Skip the next stitch and HDC into the next, SC into the next 3 stitches and HDC into the next. Skip 1 stitch and HDC into the next (should be above a loose SC in previous round). Skip stitch and HDC then SC into the next 3 stitches. HDC into the next, skip 1 and you are now at your next corner. Repeat pattern above and continue until you have formed a square shape. At end of row SL ST into the top of that CH 2 at beginning.

Row 7:

Keep same colour

CH 3 (counts as 1st DC) and simply DC into each stitch until you meet your first corner. At the corner DC 2 times into that CH 1 space from previous round. CH 2 and DC another 2 times into that same space. Then continue with pattern as above until end. At the end of the row SL ST into the top of that CH 3 from the beginning.

This is your African flower granny square completed. If you would like to make it bigger you simply just continue with the pattern on row 7 until its the size you like :). and you can change the colour of any rows to your preference.

I hope you enjoyed this pattern :)
