This pattern is in US terminology :)
SL - slip stitch
CH - Chain
SC - single crochet
HDC - half double crochet
DC double crochet
TR - treble crochet
7 DC scallop = 7 DC into the same stitch
Lets get started!
Row 1: 1st colour
Create a slip knot and CH 3 , insert hook into that 1st CH and SL ST to create a loop. CH 1 and SC 5 times in to that loop. At end of row SL ST into the 1st SC created.
row 2: keep same colour
CH 3 (counts as 1st DC) and DC again into the same stitch. CH 1 and 2 DC into the next stitch, CH 1 and DC 2 times into next stitch. continue with pattern until the end. you should have 5 lots of 2 DC with a total of 4 CH 1 spaces in between.
Row 3: Change colour (the flower)
Insert new colour into the top of the CH 3 created at beginning of the previous round and CH 4 (counts as 1st DC and CH 1). Jump straight over to the CH 1 space from previous round and DC 2 times, CH 2 and DC another 2 times all into that same space. CH 1 and jump over to the next CH 1 space from previous round and do the same as above. Continue with this pattern until the end. After you have completed your last CH 1 space, CH 1 and DC into the top of the last stitch (this keeps the edges straight at bottom).
Row 4: keep same colour
CH 3 (counts as 1st DC) and turn work. Skip straight over into the 1st CH 2 space in previous round. This is the space between the 2 lots of DC.
Into that CH 2 space create 7 DC (your 1st 7 DC scallop). Then skip straight over to the next CH 2 space from previous and create your 2nd 7 DC scallop. Continue with this pattern until the end. At end of the row make sure you DC into that last stitch to keep edges straight.
Cut and tie off yarn.
Row 5: Change colour (this row is for defining the flower petals).
Insert hook and attach new colour into the top of the DC you just ended on in previous round and turn work.
CH 1 and SC into same stitch, now create a loose SC into the CH 1 space from row 3. This means SC with enough yarn pulled up so it doesn't fold. This is hard to explain so see pics below of how it should look.
Then SC into the next 7 stitches of the 1st scallop and create another loose SC into the next CH 1 space from row 3. Continue this pattern until the end and at the end make sure you create your last loose SC in that CH 1 space from row 3 and then SC into that very last stitch. Pull up yarn and cut and tie off.
Row 6: change colour (boarder colour)
Insert new colour into the stitch you just finished on in previous round and tie on. Turn work and CH 2 (counts as 1st HDC) skip the next stitch and HDC into the next. SC into the next 3 stitches and HDC into the next. Skip 1 stitch and HDC into the next (this should be above the loose Sc in previous round). Skip next stitch and HDC into the next, SC into the next 3 stitches and HDC into the next. Skip the next stitch and you will now be at your corner for this half africaan flower square. In that stitch TR 2 times, CH 1 and TR a further 2 times (all into that one stitch that should be above a loose SC in previous round). Skip next stitch and HDC into the next. SC into the next 3 stitches and HDC into the next. Skip 1 stitch and HDC into the next (should be on the loose SC from previous round) and then skip next stitch and HDC into the next, SC into the next 3 stitches and HDC into the next, skip next and HDC into the next repeat of the other side). To finish the round SC into that last stitch.
Row 7:
if your keeping same colour = CH 3 and turn work
if changing colour, tie onto the last stitch you just finished on and CH 3.
Turn work and DC into the same space of the CH and simply DC into every stitch until you reach the corner point. At the corner DC 2 times into the CH 1 apace from previous round, CH 2 and DC a further 2 times into that same stitch. Then continue to DC into every stitch until the end. At end DC 2 times into that last stitch. Pull up yarn and cut and tie.
You have finished :)
You will just need to sew in all your ends :)
I hope you enjoyed this free pattern
